School Council Elections

School Council nominations due April 23; Elections held May 9.

The DHS School Council consists of the principal, two elected teacher representatives, one appointed business community member, and five parent representatives. On the council, we have three officer positions: Chairperson, Assistant Chairperson, and Secretary. According to our by-laws, parent representatives are nominated and elected by the parent community of DHS. Starting this week and continuing through May 9, 2014, there will be a nomination and election process to fill two parent representative openings on the DHS School Council.

Parent representatives serve two year terms, starting August 2014 and continuing through May 2016. To be eligible to run for a parent representative position, a parent must have at least one child at DHS during that time frame. Serving on the DHS School Council provides a great volunteer opportunity for parents to "give their time" to the school in an "out of the classroom" manner. The council typically reviews progress and issues facing the school, as well as the following standard topics such as attendance/enrollment, finance, school improvements, extra-curricular activities, teacher reports and student academic reports.

The time commitment of a council member involves approximately three hours per month, which is primarily time spent in our council meetings. These meetings have traditionally been held the 2nd Tuesday evening of each month, at 4:00pm in the Media Center at DHS. This year, we have two parent representative positions opening that we will need to fill. The timing of this process is as follows:

4/16:   Nomination Forms sent out
4/23:   Nomination Forms Due
4/25:   Candidates Notified
4/28:   Candidate Bios Due/Posted
5/9:     Elections Held at School (7am-6pm)
5/11:   New School Council Parent Representatives Announced
Attend Last Council Meeting of the Year

Please consider nominating yourself or someone that you know for the DHS School Council. Again, nominees must have at least one child at DHS during the next two school years. Please confirm with the individual prior to nominating them. These nominations are due no later than April 23, 2014.
